What to look for when shopping for sheet sets
Experts help us break down the most common options:
- “Cotton percale sheets are crisp, cool, and breathable, making them ideal for hot sleepers or warm climates,” says Dr. Kaylor. They’re also durable and soften with washing, but they can feel stiff at first and may wrinkle easily.
- “Cotton sateen sheets offer a smooth, silky texture with a slight sheen. They’re softer and warmer than percale, making them better suited for cooler climates; but they’re less breathable, prone to pilling, and can feel slippery,” Dr. Kaylor says.
- Linen sheets are known for their breathability, moisture-wicking properties, and durability—they’re ideal for warm weather. “Linen absorbs sweat quickly without feeling damp, and it’s naturally temperature-regulating,” Dr. Kaylor explains. “One downside is that linen sheets can feel rough initially, are prone to wrinkling, and require more care, but they will soften over time,” she adds.
- Bamboo is another good pick for hot sleepers because it’s naturally cooling, antimicrobial, and moisture-wicking. However, it tends to be less durable than other options, says Dr. Kaylor.
- “Similarly, eucalyptus sheets are incredibly soft and breathable, but are also expensive and prone to wear and pilling. This material is super absorbent, but still has a silky smooth texture,” Dr. Kaylor says.
- If you run cold, try flannel or wool sheets. “Wool is hypoallergenic, moisture-wicking, durable, and temperature-regulating,” says Dr. Kaylor. “Flannel sheets are warm, cozy, and durable—[they’re] often made from brushed cotton or wool.” One thing to note: Both of these materials require special care, so they don’t shrink.
- Microfiber, polyester, and jersey sheets are budget-friendly and low-maintenance. Microfiber is soft, lightweight, and wrinkle-resistant, but it can trap heat and is prone to pilling. Polyester sheets are also less expensive, but they can feel synthetic and are less eco-friendly, says Dr. Kaylor. “Jersey sheets, with their soft and stretchy texture, feel like a comfortable T-shirt,” she adds. “They’re typically very affordable, wrinkle-resistant, and suitable for year-round use, but lack the durability of woven fabrics and can lose their shape or stretch out over time.”
Thread count refers to the number of threads that are woven into one square inch of fabric. “It’s said that the higher the thread count, the softer and more durable the fabric,” says Dr. Kaylor. “Most bedding experts would agree thread counts between 300 to 500 are excellent for comfort, breathability, and durability. Very high thread counts (over 1,000) are likely to be marketing gimmicks.”
But thread count isn’t everything: “That’s just one factor that influences fabric quality,” Dr. Kaylor adds. “While aesthetics and thread count may seem important, they won’t impact your sleep quality as significantly as choosing bedding that supports your ideal sleep temperature will.”
Some sheets require specific care, so you’ll want to look into the brand’s instructions and make sure you can follow them before investing in a set.
Dr. Kaylor also recommends washing new sheets right out of the box to help remove chemicals, bacteria, and allergens before putting them on your bed for the first time. “Avoid strong, heavily-scented detergents, as residual fragrances can cause skin irritation or disrupt sleep,” says Dr. Kaylor. “Instead, pick a hypoallergenic detergent for sensitive skin.”
If you’re using a dryer, select a low to medium heat setting to prevent shrinkage and damage.
How we tested these sheets
First, we spoke with experts to get an idea of which materials are best for certain types of sleepers. Then, we rounded up sheet sets from some of the most popular brands (like Brooklinen, Buffy, Parachute, and more) and slept on them for weeks. We also made sure to wash them multiple times, so we could be confident they’ll hold up over time. Only sets that passed every part of our test with flying colors and helped us get a better night’s rest made it into our final list.
