Deadlift performance issues often begin with the starting position.
The classic example is limited hip mobility, which may cause the lower back to round. Other issues include dropping your hips too low, losing hamstring tension, or letting the bar drift away from you. If any of those happen, you’re already making a difficult exercise even harder.
That’s why the bottom of the deadlift is vital to get right.
You need sufficient mobility in the hips, hamstrings, adductors, ankles, and upper back to get to the bottom, but mobility alone isn’t enough. You also need stability and body awareness to create tension to cement the starting position.
